The Complete Wave Season Cruise Booking Guide for LGBTQ+ Travelers
Quick Answer: Wave Season is the cruise industry's biggest sales period, running January through March, with some lines starting as early as November. Expect lower fares, bonus perks, and the best cabin choice of the year. For LGBTQ+ travelers, it's a great time to lock in couples, solo, and group sailings, and booking with Prism Premier Travel adds onboard credit on top.
Hi, I'm Johnny, the founder of Prism Premier Travel here in Houston. I'm a former hotel general manager, a Certified LGBTQ+ Romance Travel Specialist, and LGBTQ+ Wedding Certified, and I'm a member of IGLTA. I put this guide together so you can walk into Wave Season knowing exactly how it works, what to look for, and how to get the most out of it as an LGBTQ+ traveler.
What is Wave Season and when does it start?
Wave Season is the stretch of the year when cruise lines roll out their biggest promotions. The name comes from the "wave" of bookings that travel advisors see at the start of every year. Officially it runs from January through March, which lines up with the weeks right after the holidays, when everyone is back from family time and dreaming about their next getaway.
Here's the part many guides skip: the calendar has gotten fuzzy. Some cruise lines now start their Wave offers as early as November, right after their Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales. So if you're reading this on December 28, Wave Season may already be underway.
Wave Season is also about when you book, not when you sail. Most people use it to lock in a cruise for later in the year or even the year after.
Is Wave Season really the best time to book a cruise?
Often, yes, but not always, and I'd rather be honest about that than sell you on hype.
Wave Season gives you a good shot at lower fares and extra perks like onboard credit, free upgrades, and discounts on a second guest. It also gives you the widest selection of sailings and cabins. That last part matters. A great fare doesn't help much if the cabin category you wanted sold out in December.
A few things to keep in mind:
Earlier is usually better. Booking early in Wave Season, or even before it officially starts, gives you the best pick of cabins.
The cheapest deal isn't always the best deal. Some offers trade flexibility for a lower price, so it's worth looking at the full picture and not just the headline number.
Promotions can be short. Some cruise line offers last a few weeks, and a few run for only days.
Your timing matters. Booking a cruise months out means more waiting, but it also means more time to plan, save, and get excited.
Why does Wave Season matter for LGBTQ+ travelers?
Wave Season offers a lot of value for the way many of us travel.
Couples: Many promotions discount the second guest in a stateroom, which is perfect for two travelers sharing a cabin.
Solo travelers: Wave Season is one of the best times to look for reduced single supplements, though they vary by line and sailing.
Friends and chosen family: Groups booking together have more room to get the cabins they want when they plan early. Some promotions also include free third and fourth guests.
Group sailings: LGBTQ+ group sailings give you community on board without the price tag of an all-gay charter. Booking early gives you the best chance of joining one.
Mainstream cruise lines have also gotten far better at welcoming us. Most have nondiscrimination policies that cover sexual orientation, and many host LGBTQ+ meetups early in the sailing, often listed as Friends of Dorothy gatherings.
Is a cruise really the right vacation for us?
I'm biased, and I'll own it. From my own cruising experience, a cruise is the perfect vacation for just about everyone and just about every occasion.
You get the perfect mix of relaxing and exploring. On sea days, I lounged by the pool, caught the shows, and had zero pressure to do anything at all. On port days, I explored the area, shopped, tried new foods, tried activities, and met new people. It's as active or as relaxing as you want it to be, and you only unpack once.
Honeymoons, anniversaries, birthdays, friend trips, solo escapes, a quiet recharge after a rough year. A cruise handles all of it.
Which cruise lines are best for LGBTQ+ travelers?
There are no cruise lines that operate exclusively as "gay cruise lines." The experience comes from which line you choose and who organizes your sailing. Here's how four of the lines I book most often compare.
| Cruise Line | Primary Vibe | Key LGBTQ+ Highlights | Ideal For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Virgin Voyages | Adults-only, modern, stylish | Drag shows, gender-neutral bathrooms, Pride events | Couples & friend groups wanting nightlife |
| Celebrity Cruises | Upscale, polished, modern | Frequent LGBTQ+ welcome parties, wedding options | Honeymoons, anniversaries, elevated luxury |
| Royal Caribbean | High-energy, activity-packed | Fleet-wide meetups, Pride 365 support | First-timers, mixed groups, families |
| Carnival | Casual, fun, budget-friendly | Welcoming vibe, short sailings from Galveston | Budget-conscious getaways & quick trips |
Royal Caribbean
Vibe: Big ships, lots to do, family-friendly
LGBTQ+ welcome: LGBTQ+ meetups across the fleet, support for Pride 365, symbolic same-sex ceremonies at sea or in select ports
Wave Season deals to expect: Fare savings, free third and fourth guests, savings on onboard extras
Great for: Mixed groups, families, first-time cruisers, and travelers who want endless activities
Virgin Voyages
Vibe: Adults-only, modern, stylish

Wave Season deals to expect: Discounted second sailor
Great for: Couples, friend groups, and travelers who want a child-free, nightlife-forward sailing
Celebrity Cruises
Vibe: Upscale, polished, modern
LGBTQ+ welcome: Frequent LGBTQ+ welcome parties, wedding options
Wave Season deals to expect: Big discounts on the second guest plus bonus savings
Great for: Honeymoons, anniversaries, and travelers who want elevated without being stuffy
Carnival Cruise Line
Vibe: Casual, fun, great value
LGBTQ+ welcome: Welcoming atmosphere, and the line has been part of LGBTQ+ group charters
Wave Season deals to expect: Early-booking offers, often with short windows
Great for: Budget-friendly getaways and shorter sailings, including departures from Galveston
The deals listed above are patterns from recent Wave Seasons, not current offers. Promotions change often, and I'll pull the live details for your sailing when we talk.
Houston travelers have a perk of their own. Both Royal Caribbean and Carnival sail from Galveston, which can save you a flight.
Should I book an all-gay charter or a mainstream sailing?
Both are wonderful, and neither is better. It comes down to the experience you want.
An all-gay charter means nearly everyone on board is LGBTQ+, usually with parties, drag stars, and themed events. Mega-ship charters can have a high-energy party feel, and the price is often higher.
A mainstream cruise gives you more ship and itinerary choices, works better for mixed groups and families, and often costs less. You can still find community through meetups and LGBTQ+ group sailings.
If you're not sure which fits you, that's exactly what a consultation is for.
How do I check that the ports on my itinerary are welcoming?
This is the part I never skip, and I'd encourage you not to either. A cruise line can be wonderfully welcoming while a port of call is not. Dozens of countries still criminalize same-sex relationships, and some have restrictions that affect LGBTQ+ travelers.
Before you book:
Look up every port on the itinerary using the U.S. State Department's LGBTQI+ travelers page and the Human Dignity Trust country profiles.
Make sure the name on your booking matches your passport exactly.
If your passport has an X gender marker and the booking system only shows male or female, tell me before we book so we can sort it out with the cruise line ahead of time.
I build this check into every itinerary I put together, so you're not guessing.
Can we get married or celebrate a milestone at sea?
Yes. Some cruise lines offer ceremonies on board or in select ports, and others make celebrations easy with special packages and venues. The details, including what is legally recognized, vary by line and port, so ask before you plan around it. As an LGBTQ+ Wedding Certified advisor, this is one of my favorite things to help with.
How does booking with Prism Premier Travel work?
My normal planning fee for cruise bookings is $100 per person. During Wave Season, I'm offering two ways to save and earn more.
Promo 1: Waived planning fees from January to March. Book with me between January and March and I'll waive my planning fee.
Promo 2: Earn onboard credit on every stateroom. Book a stateroom with me on any cruise line and earn onboard credit based on your cabin type:
Ocean view stateroom: $50 in onboard credit
Balcony stateroom: $100 in onboard credit
Suite: $150 in onboard credit
The onboard credit is per stateroom. Onboard credit will be added to your cruise account 3 months before your sailing.
These promos stack with cruise line offers. Some of my cruise partners may be running their own promotions or offering extra perks to my clients, and those can be combined with mine. Availability depends on the line and the sailing.
You also get 24/7 trip support while you're traveling, so if something goes sideways, you're not on your own.
Should I book through a travel advisor or on my own?
You can do either, and I'll make it easy both ways.
Working with me means a real person who knows the LGBTQ+ side of travel, checks your ports, matches you with the right line and sailing, and is there around the clock if something comes up. You also get the onboard credit perks above.
If you'd rather book on your own, you can use my affiliate link below. Just know that booking this way means you won't get my onboard credit perks or the 24/7 trip support.
