Virgin Voyages vs. Celebrity Cruises: Which Is Better for LGBTQ+ Travelers?

Quick Answer: Pick Virgin Voyages if you want an adults-only (18+) ship with no dress code, no buffets, 20+ restaurants included in your fare, and a party that runs late. Pick Celebrity Cruises if you want a polished, premium sailing with classic dining, a couple of dress-up nights, suites with a private restaurant, and the option of a legal wedding at sea. Both are welcoming to LGBTQ+ travelers, and Wave Season (January through March) is the best time to book either one.

Hi, I'm Johnny, founder of Prism Premier Travel here in Houston and a queer travel advisor. I sailed Virgin Voyages in July 2026, and Celebrity is the line my clients most often weigh against it. Both are popular with LGBTQ+ travelers, and they are very different ships. So let's put them side by side, honestly, so you can figure out which one fits you.

What's the vibe on each ship?

Virgin Voyages feels like a boutique hotel and a nightclub had a baby. There are no kids on board, no assigned dining times, no formal nights, and no giant buffet halls. Virgin says it plainly: Pride isn't a month on their ships. Drag shows, Drag Bingo, and pride-themed parties happen year-round. Then there's Scarlet Night, the full-ship party where everyone dresses in red. Pack your best red look. Trust me.

One thing to know going in: Virgin sailings are not gay cruises, and Virgin says so itself. They're adults-only cruises where everyone is welcome, so you'll share the ship with straight couples, allies, and friend groups too. For a lot of my clients, that mix is exactly the point.

Celebrity Cruises is the grown-up, polished choice. Think beautiful design, great service, wine with dinner, and a slower pace. It isn't adults-only, but it doesn't feel like a theme park, and the Solarium is an adults-only space when you want quiet. On Edge Series ships like Celebrity Edge, Apex, and Beyond, you get features like the Magic Carpet, an open-air platform that moves up and down the side of the ship and becomes a different dining spot depending on which deck it's on.

If Virgin is a rooftop party, Celebrity is a really good cocktail lounge. Both are fun. They're just different kinds of fun.

How does dining compare on Virgin Voyages and Celebrity?

This is the biggest difference between the two, and it changes how your whole trip feels.

Dining on Virgin Voyages

Every restaurant on Virgin is included in your fare. There are 20+ eateries, no buffets, and no extra charge for the specialty spots. A few I tell everyone about: The Wake for steak and seafood, Pink Agave for upscale Mexican, Gunbae for Korean BBQ you grill at the table, and Extra Virgin for Italian.

Here's the catch. Virgin's six signature restaurants are popular, and Virgin recommends booking them before you sail. How early you can book depends on your fare. For bookings made on or after October 7, 2025:

  • Lock It In or Base fares: 15 days before sailing
  • Essential fares: 45 days before sailing
  • Premium fares: 60 days before sailing
  • RockStar and Mega RockStar Quarters: 120 days before sailing

My tip from my own sailing: brunch books up even faster than dinner. I learned that one the hard way. The good news is that breakfast and lunch at the non-specialty spots are always available, so nobody goes hungry. When I book you, I'll remind you the second your window opens.

Dining on Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity works more like a classic cruise, but elevated. Your fare covers breakfast, lunch, and dinner in the main restaurants and casual spots like the Oceanview Café. You choose early seating, late seating, or anytime dining when you book. On the Edge Series ships, there are four main restaurants instead of one big dining room, and you can try the others based on availability.

Specialty dining costs extra. That includes Fine Cut Steakhouse, Raw on 5, and Le Petit Chef, a dinner with 3D animations projected right onto your table. Celebrity also adds a 20% gratuity to specialty dining. If you're a foodie, Celebrity sells Specialty Dining Packages, and I can help you figure out if one makes sense for your sailing.

What about drinks and Wi-Fi on Virgin vs. Celebrity?

This is where people get confused, so here's how each line handles the add-ons.

Virgin Voyages Celebrity Cruises
Included drinks Filtered still and sparkling water, sodas, non-pressed juices, drip coffee, and bagged teas Coffee, tea, iced tea, lemonade, tap water, and juices. Soda, cocktails, beer, and wine are extra unless you have a drink package.
Drink packages None in the traditional sense. You can prepay a Bar Tab (onboard credit for drinks) before you sail, and Virgin adds a bonus amount on top. The All Included rate bundles a Classic Drinks Package (beer, spirits, cocktails, wine by the glass, soda, premium coffee) with Basic Wi-Fi.
When to decide Bar Tab must be bought before sailing, up to 24 hours out. It can't be bought onboard, and unused credit isn't refunded. All Included must be chosen when you book. It can't be added later, and everyone in the stateroom has to choose the same rate.
Wi-Fi Included on every sailing. Basic, Classic, or Premium depending on your fare. Basic Wi-Fi with All Included, or buy a Wi-Fi package
Tips on drinks No extra gratuity on drinks 20% gratuity added to drinks and beverage packages (All Included covers the package gratuity)

Quick take: if you're a light drinker, Virgin's included basics plus paying as you go usually feels easy. If you like a cocktail by the pool every afternoon, Celebrity's All Included rate is worth a serious look. Either way, you make this decision before you sail, so let's talk it through when we build your quote.

Are tips included on Virgin Voyages or Celebrity?

No, and I want to be really clear about this, because I still see old posts online saying Virgin's tips are included. They aren't anymore.

Virgin Voyages: Starting October 7, 2025, Virgin adds a service gratuity of $22 per person, per day, to your onboard account. If you prepay before your voyage, it's $20 per person, per night. Prepaid gratuities are locked in and non-refundable. The upside is that it's the only tip you'll pay on Virgin. There's no extra gratuity on drinks, dining, or spa services.

Celebrity Cruises: Celebrity adds a daily gratuity to your onboard account unless you prepay it, and the amount depends on your stateroom category. On top of that, a 20% gratuity is added to spa and salon services, drinks and drink packages, specialty dining, room service, and minibar purchases.

Gratuities on both lines can be adjusted onboard if you didn't prepay. I'll lay out every one of these costs in your proposal so there are no surprises at the end of your trip.

Do I have to dress up on Virgin Voyages or Celebrity?

On Virgin, no. There are no dress codes, so come exactly as you are. The only "rule" is red for Scarlet Night, and even that's just for fun.

On Celebrity, a little. Smart Casual is required in the main restaurants, specialty restaurants, and the theater, which means no shorts or flip flops at dinner. Each sailing also has one or two Evening Chic nights: one on sailings of 6 nights or less, two on sailings of 7 nights or more. Evening Chic is optional, and Smart Casual is still fine if you'd rather skip the glam. But plenty of my clients love an excuse to dress up and take photos.

How LGBTQ+ friendly is each cruise line, really?

Both are genuinely welcoming. They just show it in different ways.

Virgin Voyages builds inclusion into the everyday experience. Drag shows, Drag Bingo, Scarlet Night, and pride-themed parties aren't saved for June. They happen year-round. The no-dress-code, no-kids setup also means less of that "am I going to be the only queer couple at dinner?" feeling. Cruise Critic's Cruisers' Choice Awards named Virgin Best for LGBTQ+ Travelers in the ocean category.

Celebrity Cruises has a long track record. Celebrity holds an LGBTQ+ welcome party on the first night of almost every cruise across the fleet, and it's a great icebreaker if you want to meet people. Every June, all Celebrity ships celebrate Pride at Sea. And Celebrity officiated the first legal same-sex wedding at sea in 2018, which still matters to a lot of couples I work with.

One thing is true for both lines: the ship is only part of your trip. Every port has its own laws and culture, and some are more welcoming than others. I check every itinerary for LGBTQ+ safety before I recommend it. I explain how in my Wave Season Cruise Booking Guide.

Which one should you book?

Here's how I usually match people.

Book Virgin Voyages if you want an adults-only ship, love nightlife and drag, hate dress codes, want great food without paying extra for it, or you're planning a trip with a group of friends.

Book Celebrity Cruises if you're celebrating a honeymoon or anniversary, want classic dining and dress-up nights, want a suite experience, are planning a legal wedding at sea, or you're traveling with family, including kids.

Want the suite life? Both lines have it. Virgin's RockStar Quarters were designed by Tom Dixon and come with their own RockStar services team and early booking for dining and experiences. Celebrity's The Retreat includes a private restaurant (Luminae), butler service, premium drinks, and premium Wi-Fi.

Still stuck? That's what I'm here for. Tell me how you like to vacation and I'll tell you which ship fits.
