A Rainbow Flag in the Lobby Doesn’t Make a Hotel Gay-Friendly. Here’s What Does.

Let me paint you a picture.

You’ve done the research. You’ve found a hotel with great reviews, a beautiful pool, and a website that proudly features a same-sex couple on the homepage. You book the king bed, you pack your bags, and you show up at check-in only to have the front desk agent glance at you and your partner and say, “Oh, did you want us to change that to two doubles?

It’s a small moment. But it lands like a punch.

This is what’s known in the industry as the “single bed dilemma,” and it happens more than you’d think, even at properties that market themselves as LGBTQ+ friendly. Because there’s a real difference between a hotel that hangs a rainbow flag in June and a hotel that has actually done the work.

Knowing the difference is a big part of what I do.

Why “Gay-Friendly” Isn’t Enough Anymore

The term “gay-friendly” has been so broadly applied that it’s almost lost its meaning. Any hotel can slap that label on a listing. What actually matters is whether the staff has been trained, whether the policies back it up, and whether queer guests are treated with the same ease and dignity as everyone else, not just during Pride month.

There are third-party certification programs, like TAG Approved, IGLTA accreditation, and Queer Destinations Committed, that hold properties to real, audited standards. We’re talking staff training requirements, non-discrimination policies, and ongoing accountability. These aren’t perfect systems, but they’re a much stronger signal than a hotel’s own self-description.

But even certifications only go so far. The real vetting happens through relationships — and that’s where a specialized advisor comes in.

You’re More on Your Own Than You Think

Here’s something that surprised even me when I came across the data: corporate support for LGBTQ+ travelers has been quietly declining. A 2026 study found that only 20% of employers now offer any kind of policy-driven safety support for queer business travelers, down from 27% just two years ago.

That’s not just a business travel issue. It reflects a broader shift where queer people are increasingly navigating the world without institutional backup. Which means the support you build around your travel, who’s in your corner, who’s done the homework, who picks up the phone when something goes wrong, matters more than ever.

An online booking platform isn’t going to advocate for you when the hotel gets your room wrong. A chatbot isn’t going to call the front desk manager and make sure your pronouns are on file before you arrive. A real advisor does.

What It Actually Looks Like to Have Someone in Your Corner

When I book travel for a client, the work doesn’t stop at hitting confirm. I’m reaching out to the property directly, pre-confirming room configurations, flagging any specific needs, making sure the welcome experience is seamless from the moment you walk in. For clients with more complex travel dynamics, whether that’s traveling as a throuple, as a trans traveler with specific privacy needs, or simply as a couple who’s tired of explaining themselves, that groundwork matters enormously.

And it’s not just about comfort. Through my consortium network, I have direct access to preferred properties, escalation paths to senior management, and relationships that OTAs simply don’t have. If something goes sideways, a flight cancels, a room isn’t right, an unexpected situation comes up, you’re not navigating it alone.

I started Prism Premier because I believe queer travelers deserve more than generic itineraries and self-reported “inclusion” filters. You deserve someone who has actually done the work, who knows which properties walk the talk, and which ones are just flying a flag.
